10 TIPS TO BEING A MAKEUP ARTIST

When deciding to be a makeup artist there are a few things you want to keep in mind. I am sharing some of the errors I made in an effort to help you become the best artist possible. I hope this is helpful and that you walk away with a different perspective.

1. Don't invest in high end makeup until your business is stable. We are quick to want the best for our kit and clients but until you're actually making money...you have to be reasonable with your kit. The drugstore has many great items that you can add to your kit until you're able to invest in a higher quality brand.

2. Be reasonable with your pricing. Yes, we are all talented and we have great things to offer. You want to research what other artists in your area are charging and you want to reduce that amount by half. Remember, you are starting and you want to build your clientele. You also want to remember that as artists you are able to increase your fees based on experience.

3. Don't be closed off to offering your services in exchange for pictures. As an artist you have to build a portfolio and if you are just starting off you know that booking gigs is not as easy as it sounds. When you collaborate with other vendors you can network, build your portfolio and participate in some really cool events.

4. Showcase what makes you different or define your signature look. You want someone to reflect on their experience with you and recall a look or a gesture that defines you as their artist.

5. Listen. You want to capture your clients vision and not tell them what would work for them. Give input as it is needed but at the end of the day...your client knows best.

6. Be punctual. Really, this means be early. It's always best to be able to start early and have time for final touch ups and yes...even have some room for mishaps or wedding emergencies.

7. Suggest that your clients come ready with pictures of their ideal look. This will help with keeping trials short and your overall makeup time running on time.

8. Always be prepared. The week of an event you want to start organizing your kit to make sure you have it in order. You want to make sure that you have lash glue, lash scissors, water proof mascara...these are some of the things that have happened to me throughout my time freelancing. I will tell you that I always have a back up and I have been fortunate enough to prevent a makeup emergency.

9. Always remain calm. If you are in crisis you will put your client in crisis. As a professional you need to be prepared, be calm and move fast. Even when things appear difficult you have to be able to calm yourself down and handle the crisis at hand without anyone knowing.

10. Don't skip skincare! Often we focus on makeup and disregard skincare...this is a HUGE no! When you take time to address skincare you will see that whatever you apply on the face will look smoother, you won't have to work so hard at applying the makeup and that the end result will be 100 times better.
